There is no single best CAD software for 3D printing. A bracket wants a parametric modeler and a dragon wants a sculpting tool. The person who needs one spacer by tonight and never wants to open CAD again wants neither. Below are ten tools sorted by that job, with prices and export limits checked on each vendor's page on 2026-09-04.
The best CAD software for 3D printing depends on the part. For functional mechanical parts, use a parametric modeler: Autodesk Fusion is free for personal use under $1,000 a year of revenue, Onshape is free for public non-commercial documents, and FreeCAD 1.1 is free with no strings. For figures and organic shapes, use Blender, which is free and mesh-based. For a first print in an hour, Tinkercad is free and runs in a browser, but it cannot export STEP. If you want a professional feel without a subscription, Plasticity costs $175 once. SolidWorks for Makers is $48 a year with a $2,000 revenue cap. All of these need hours of learning before the first good part. The exception is describe-it tools such as Type Parts, where you type the part in plain words and get a tested parametric model with sliders and STL or STEP export, one free with no account.
The comparison table
Prices are USD, before tax, as printed on each vendor's site on 2026-09-04. "Parametric" means you can change a dimension later and the model rebuilds. "Mesh" means you push triangles around, which is great for sculpting and poor for holes that need to be 8.00 mm.

Ranked by what you are making
Brand rankings put Fusion at the top and Tinkercad at the bottom and call it a day. That is useless if you are printing miniatures, and it is also useless if you are printing one spacer for a shelf and have no interest in becoming a CAD person. So here are the same tools sorted by job.
A functional mechanical part
A bracket, a gear, an adapter between a shop vac and a hose that was never meant for it. This is most of what gets printed on a Bambu or a Prusa, and it needs parametric CAD. You will change a hole diameter after the first test print. In a mesh tool that means starting over. In a parametric tool it means editing one number.
Autodesk Fusion is the right answer for most people here, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest. It is free for personal use as long as you make under $1,000 a year from your designs and use it for home-based, non-commercial projects. The licence runs as a 3-year subscription you renew. The personal tier has limits: Autodesk lists "limited import/export file types", limited drawings, limited CAM, and the paid tier is the only one with "unlimited active and editable Fusion documents". Redditors in the r/3Dprinting thread on this topic say it plainly: "It's free for personal use, easy to learn, feels modern," and in the same thread, "I'm very conscious they could just shut that off as and when they please." Onshape Free is the other strong pick. It runs in a browser on anything, including an iPad, and it exports STEP, STL and 3MF. The catch is in the plan name: it is for non-commercial designs that are public. Anyone can find your documents. For a spool holder that is fine. For a product you plan to sell, it is not.
FreeCAD 1.1.3 is the only fully parametric option with no revenue cap and no document cap. Nobody can change the terms on you, because there are none. The Reddit thread's top-voted answer was "You want FreeCAD. People complain about a learning curve - it's not that bad. The latest version is very very capable." Version 1.0 added a built-in assembly workbench. The interface still feels like a collection of workbenches rather than one program, because that is what it is. Budget a weekend and expect to swear at the Sketcher at least once.
SolidWorks for Makers is the cheap way into the software most mechanical engineers use at work. $48 a year, $15 a month, and you may sell what you make up to $2,000 a year. Two limits matter for printing. The desktop app, SolidWorks Connected, needs Windows. And native files are digitally watermarked so they only open with a Makers licence, though STEP and IGES exports open anywhere.
Plasticity sits apart. It is a direct modeler on the Parasolid kernel with a perpetual licence: $175 for the Indie tier on up to two machines, $299 for Studio on up to four, each with 12 months of updates. Commercial use is allowed on both. It has live dimensions, but no history timeline, so it rebuilds nothing when you change your mind. Great for people coming from Blender who want real solids. Less great for the tenth revision of a bracket.
An enclosure
A box for a Raspberry Pi, a case for a sensor, a lid that snaps on. Enclosures punish imprecision. Wall thickness has to match your nozzle, the lip has to clear the base by 0.2 to 0.3 mm, and the board's mounting holes are where the board says they are.
Use the same parametric tools as above. Fusion and Onshape both handle shells, fillets and hole patterns without fuss, and both let you type a clearance once and reuse it. FreeCAD does too, with more clicks. Avoid Tinkercad and SelfCAD here. Both are mesh-based, and Shapr3D's own review of SelfCAD notes that "changing the dimensions of one feature could result in a broken model." That is exactly what an enclosure revision is.
Shapr3D deserves a mention if you like sketching on an iPad. It is built on Parasolid, so the geometry is real solid geometry, and it feels quicker than Fusion for the first hour. But the free Basic plan is two projects and "basic resolution 3MF, STL" export. STEP and high-resolution exports need Pro at $25 a month per seat, $299 billed annually. The person who started the Reddit thread hit exactly that wall: "when I tried to export the file I got hit by a $300/yr paywall." Know that before you invest the hours.
A figure or an organic model
Miniatures, busts, a dragon, a replacement head for a toy. None of the tools above want to do this, and you should not make them.
Blender 5.2 is the answer. It is free under the GPL, runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, and its sculpting tools are what the miniature scene uses. It exports STL. It does not export STEP, and nobody printing a bust cares. The cost is the learning curve, which one Reddit commenter called "extremely steep," and the fact that mesh modeling produces non-manifold surfaces if you are careless. Modern slicers repair small holes on import, so this is less scary than it used to be.
SelfCAD is the beginner-friendly mesh option. It has a free plan, a Pro plan at $14.99 a month or $11.99 a month billed annually, and a built-in slicer, so you can go from model to G-code in one app. It runs in a browser and as a PC download. The free plan exports meshes and includes the slicer, but the Sculpting tool itself is on the Pro plan only. It is fine for lettering and simple shapes. It is the wrong place for anything that has to fit.
Tinkercad also does simple organic-ish work, in the sense that a snowman is three spheres. That is the limit.
A quick fix in an hour
You need a spacer, a cable clip, a knob, a hook. You have a printer warmed up and no patience.
Tinkercad is the classic answer and it still works. It is free, it runs in a browser, and it exports STL, OBJ and GLTF. You drag shapes onto a workplane, make some of them holes, group, export. Most people ship a first part inside an hour. Its limits show the moment you need a real fillet, a thread, or a hole that must be exactly 6.2 mm after printing. OpenSCAD is the quick-fix tool for people who would rather type than drag. A cable clip is ten lines of code, every dimension is a variable, and the stable release has been 2021.01 for years with development snapshots alongside. Learning CAD properly
If the goal is a skill rather than a part, pick the tool you will still be using in three years.
Fusion is the most common choice and has the most tutorials. Onshape teaches modern cloud CAD habits and has a good free learning center. FreeCAD teaches you how CAD actually works underneath, at the cost of a rougher interface. SolidWorks for Makers is the pick if you want a line on a résumé, since SolidWorks is what the job listings say. Tom's 3D, which ranks on this search, argues for FreeCAD as a full replacement for all of them. That is a fair position for someone willing to invest the time.

The category the lists leave out
Every roundup on this search, including Shapr3D's top-10 and the Autodesk solutions page, assumes you will learn CAD. Some of you will not. You have a printer, you have a part in your head, and you have no interest in sketch constraints. Until recently your options were Thingiverse and hoping somebody else had your exact dimensions.
Describe-it tools change that. You type the part in plain words, with its real dimensions, and get back a model. The good ones generate parametric code rather than a mesh, so the result has the same editable dimensions a Fusion model would. Here is how it works in Type Parts, since that is the one I can speak for. You describe the part, say "an L bracket 60 by 40 mm, 4 mm thick, two 5 mm holes on each leg, 2 mm fillets." Claude writes a build123d script with named parameters and checks, such as wall thickness and hole clearance. A sandbox runs the script and rejects anything that fails. You get sliders for every parameter, and moving a slider re-runs the script locally with no new model call. Download STL for the slicer or STEP for a machine shop. It handles single parts and assemblies up to four parts. It does not do organic shapes; for a dragon, use Blender.
Pricing is simple. One free part with no account. Four credits at signup. Hobby is $15 a month for 25 credits with STL export. Maker is $49 a month for 80 credits with STL and STEP. Pro is $119 a month for 250 credits. Prices are USD before tax.
Be clear about the trade. A describe-it tool is faster than any of the ten above for a bracket, an adapter or a knob, and it is worse than all of them for a part you will redesign twenty times with your own hands. If you are going to spend a hundred hours designing this year, learn Fusion or FreeCAD. If you are going to spend three, describe the part.
How to choose in one minute
- Functional part, willing to learn: Fusion for personal use, or FreeCAD if licence terms worry you.
- Functional part, no interest in learning: a describe-it tool, then check the STEP in your slicer.
- Enclosure: Fusion or Onshape. Type the clearances once.
- Figure or sculpt: Blender.
- One quick spacer: Tinkercad, or describe it.
- Career skill: SolidWorks for Makers or Fusion.
- iPad first: Shapr3D, knowing that STEP export costs $299 a year.
- Hate subscriptions, want real solids: Plasticity at $175 once.
Print the first one, measure it, and change the number. That loop is the whole hobby, and the best CAD software for 3D printing is whichever one makes that loop shortest for you.
