The best Tinkercad alternative depends on which wall you hit. This post names four walls and matches nine tools to them.

The short answer

The best alternative to Tinkercad is the one that fixes your specific complaint. For fillets, chamfers and STEP export with the same drag-and-drop blocks, SketchForge is free, runs in the browser and needs no account. For exact dimensions and models you can edit months later, Onshape gives you full parametric CAD in the browser at no cost, as long as your documents stay public. FreeCAD does the same thing offline and open source, with a harder learning curve. Fusion for personal use is free for three years if you make less than $1,000 a year from your designs. Shapr3D is the pick for iPad users who want push-pull modelling, though STEP export sits behind a paid plan. If every part you make is a bracket, an adapter or a gear, Type Parts skips the learning curve entirely: type the dimensions, get a parametric model with sliders, download STL or STEP. It does not do figurines or organic shapes.

Why people leave Tinkercad

The posts asking this question describe the same four walls.

Complexity. The Facebook post that ranks for this query asks: "Is there another beginner friendly cad similar to tinker cad? I'm having issues with the complexity of my designs." Tinkercad's own help page names the cause: "If your design has become slow to edit or not opening, it may be because of the nested groupings and/or shape generators which has caused this design to be too complex." A maker on the MakeWithTech forum hit the hard edge of it: imports are capped at 25 MB, and the object "has red edges and anything I do takes ages."

Fillets and chamfers. Tinkercad does booleans and nothing else. Shapr3D's comparison table lists Tinkercad's solid modelling commands as "Booleans only." A rounded edge in Tinkercad means subtracting a cylinder by hand, and it never quite lines up.

Exact dimensions. Tinkercad builds meshes. That is fine for a keychain and a problem for a part that has to fit a bearing. The Reddit thread that ranks first for this query is titled "Need CAD software that's a step up from TinkerCAD".

Editing later. Tinkercad has no history. Shapr3D's page puts it plainly: Tinkercad "requires you to rebuild if you need to change parts of your model." If you printed a bracket in March and need it 4 mm wider in September, you start over.

SketchForge: Tinkercad's blocks, plus fillets and STEP

SketchForge is the newest option and the closest to Tinkercad: browser based, saves locally, no account. 3Druck.com reports "direct tools for chamfers and fillets on edges, which can be undone later" and "the import and export of STEP-files as well as STL and OBJ formats." There is a sketch mode for drawing a profile and extruding it. The developer says the project is early and has bugs, with better booleans and measurement tools still on the to-do list. It solves the fillet wall and the STEP wall. It does not solve the complexity wall, because it is still blocks.

SelfCAD: more tools, still in the browser

Additive-X's list of Tinkercad alternatives calls SelfCAD "an upgrade over Tinkercad with more organic and technical modelling tools" and warns of a "steeper learning curve than Tinkercad." The free plan is free forever, exports meshes and includes an STL slicer. Pro is $14.99 a month, or $11.99 a month billed annually. It is a mesh tool, so exact solids and STEP are not what it is for.

Womp: browser modelling for organic shapes

Womp is free in the browser on its Starter plan, with Pro at $9.99 a month billed annually at $119.88 a year. Womp's own comparison page describes "liquid modeling supporting both technical and organic designs" with STL, OBJ, GLTF and FBX export. If you left Tinkercad because your designs are smooth and sculptural, this is the fit. If you left because a hole needed to be 8.00 mm, it is the wrong tool.

Onshape: real parametric CAD, free in the browser

Onshape is the full step up. The free plan is for non-commercial use with public document storage. Paid plans start at $1,500 per user per year, so hobbyists stay on Free. It runs in the browser and exports STEP, STL, 3MF and OBJ. It fixes every wall on the list: constrained sketches, fillets and a feature history you can edit later. The cost is time. Fusion for personal use: free for three years, with conditions

Autodesk's page states the terms: "For personal, non-commercial projects only. Limited to individuals generating less than $1,000 USD annually." The licence is a three-year subscription and lists "Limited import/export file types" as a restriction. Fusion has everything Onshape has plus CAM, and the same weekend of learning.

FreeCAD: free forever, open source, patient users only

FreeCAD is open source, runs on Windows, Mac and Linux, and reads and writes STEP, STL, OBJ and more. No sign-up, no paywall. A MakeWithTech forum member points out that its Part workbench "is exactly like tinkercad," with cubes and cylinders you combine with booleans, plus sketches and a spreadsheet for parametric models. Another member in the same thread tried it and gave up. Both are right. FreeCAD does everything, and it makes you work for it. Shapr3D: push-pull modelling on iPad, STEP behind the paywall

Shapr3D runs on macOS, iPadOS, Windows and visionOS, with a web version for viewing only. The Free plan allows 2 projects and exports basic quality 3MF and STL. Pro is $25 a month billed annually ($299 a year before tax) or $38 month to month, and it adds STEP, IGES and high-resolution STL. It has a solid kernel with history, so fillets and later edits both work, and the push-pull modelling suits an Apple Pencil. The MakeWithTech thread has the fair warning: the free tier "only exports a low polygon version."

Plasticity: direct modelling, one payment

Plasticity is desktop software for Windows, macOS and Linux. Indie is $175 and Studio is $299, both perpetual licences with 12 months of updates, and there is a 30-day free trial. Indie exports STEP, OBJ and STL. It is direct modelling with no history tree, so it is fast and precise but leaves you without a parametric model to re-edit. Good for surfaces without a subscription. Wrong for someone who wants sliders.

Type Parts: skip the learning curve for mechanical parts

Every tool above asks you to learn its interface before you get a part. Text-to-CAD skips that. You type "L bracket, 60 by 40 mm, 4 mm thick, two 5 mm holes 30 mm apart, 3 mm fillets on the outside corners," and the model writes a build123d script with named parameters and checks. A sandbox runs the script, confirms the holes go through and the walls are thick enough, and hands you a model with sliders. Dragging a slider re-runs the script. Download STL for the slicer or STEP for a machinist.

Fillets are a phrase. Dimensions are exact because they are numbers in code. Editing later is a slider. Complexity is capped by the script.

Which one to pick

If the wall was fillets and STEP, try SketchForge first. It costs nothing and you already know how it works.

If the wall was exact dimensions or editing a part months later, go to Onshape and give it a weekend. Fusion is the same trade with a licence to watch.

If the wall was complexity and you never wanted to be a CAD user, describe the part instead. One free part with no account tells you in five minutes whether it works for what you make.

If you make sculptural things, Womp or SelfCAD. If you want software you own outright, Plasticity. If you have the patience, FreeCAD.
